To the Editor: Enough already! Bob Driehaus reported in his article “Collision on Ohio Highway Kills 5 Members of a Family” (NY Times, January 1, 2008) that a drunk driver going the wrong way killed innocent people including an infant child. This was the 73,427th article in the New York Times since automobiles were invented where it was reported that a drunk driver killed people in this same way. OK, you got me. I made that up. But, really, enough already. With all our technical abilities, we should be able to put an end to such stories. Seat belts we have. Collapsing steering wheels we have. Car phones, GPS units and keyless entry systems we have. What we need is a simple device that will make cars into paperweights if would-be drivers are unable to pass a self-administered sobriety or competency test. Let us challenge the technical wizards in our society to develop such a unit. And, let Bob Driehaus report to us on how much it will cost, and who is against it and who is for it and then, let us make it a standard feature on any motor vehicle that uses our Nation’s byways and highways if not our waterways and airways as well. If we fail to do this, we will be the ones going the wrong way. – Drew Kopf |
