One of the things I recall doing in either art class or in school before we actually had separate art classes was printing exercise that was accomplished with potatoes. We sliced potatoes in half, carved a design into the exposed middle part and painted the edge with some type of paint, which we, in turn, impressed upon a waiting piece of paper. The reverse image of the carved design was the resulting "print" that appeared on the paper. I was impressed with it but for some reason never returned to that medium until a few years ago, when I decided to send out a Jewish New Years Card and to make the design for it myself.
The results were very satisfying to me. I liked he printed piece so much I framed one that had been printed in Green and keep it hanging near me in my office. But, the real joy came at an odd moment, in a most unexpected way and at a time similarly unexpected. I was paying what is referred to as a Shiva call, a condolence call, to neighbors who had recently lost a parent who had lived with them. At a certain break in the conversation, my friend, beckoned to me to follow him into their dining room and, when we got there, he casually motioned with his outstretched arm to one of the walls in the room to direct my attention to a delightful frame in which was displayed my New Years Card, which contains a phrase mentioned the Prayer Book for that holiday and which I find to be a great reminder of where we fit in to the world.
I have just a few prints, but the
writing of this piece has kindled a desire in me to do some more of them and
to perhaps look into engraving as well. (Posted April 14, 2008)
